I got so excited to write about this topic after hearing about it from my history teacher, The amazing initiative by the parliament of India had assented the RTE rule on the 26thof August in 2009
The right to education act which was enacted in the year of 2009, made education free and compulsory for all kids between the age of 6-14 .
Free education means that the kids whose parents cannot afford to send their children to school will get education in government sponsored schools.
Compulsory education means it’s the duty of the government to ensure these children go to school.
Although the government has made such a great rule, which is benefiting the people we are not using the facility provided and instead the parents want the kids to work for the family and they are not paying attention on the fact that if their kids are educated the amount they will earn after years will probably be the amount which the child couldn’t even earn in a year
The RTE act does not discriminate between people based on their colour, cast, creed, gender, class, religion therefore all Indian citizen’s between the age of 6-14 will receive education. Although there are rule’s, still school’s in rural area’s have been criticised for being ineffective and corruption ridden.
The CABE committee is in process to change the age limit from 6-14 to 3-16 so that the children complete their board examination at the least.
Although the quality of education provided by the government school’s is not of best standards, they form 80% of all recognised school’s in India. Sadly, public schools lack good teachers, infrastructure, good washrooms, and other basic things which is provided to kids in big private schools . According to Guruchan Das, 54% urban children attend private school and the rate is increasing by 3% each year. Even the poor children are abandoning government school‘s.
To support this act the government passed the rule in which private schools should reserve 25% of their seats for these unprivileged children, but I have barely seen these kids going to these large, private, international school’s.
The schools are not allowed to take any donation, capitation fees, or interview the parent or the child for admission.
The Right To Education rule ensures that the employment of every teacher weather in urban or in rural areas is in a balanced way. It is the responsibility of the local government that the child is not discriminated by the teachers or other kids as they belong to lower class .
Since this rule has been passed the literacy rate has increased for up-to 10-20% and I hope it keeps on increasing so that less kids spend their nights awake selling balloons , fruits, toys on the street to support their large family’s in order to survive or are exploited to sell and make drugs .
They cannot stop me . I will get my education, if it is at home , school , or any other place
